Blood Under StarlightFaerun, Toril
The night was still. There was no omen or warning in this night, nothing that might hint at the coming threat.
The drow had come to the surface.
At the edge of the forest, the raiding party had gathered, waiting for the return of their scout, sent ahead to check the area. Some of the raiders prodded the trunks of the trees in wariness or disgust. Some twitched at every little sound; the rustle of leaves in the breeze, the flight of a night-bird overhead, all seemed strange and threatening.
Some, on the other hand, were staring up at the sky, looking at the stars. They'd been taught that the distant pinpricks of light served as a mocking warning of the searing fire that would rise in the sky here during other hours; combined with its obvious reminder of the uncomfortable lack of stone overhead, it was little wonder their expressions contained both distaste and perverse fascination.

Watcher - a Mazarun and Rantel taleWatcher
Rantel has grown accustomed, more or less, to having his hearing back. He no longer needs to watch a speaker, to read their words from the movements of their mouth.
He watches Mazarun anyway. He watches Mazarun's lips shape each word. He watches Mazarun's hands, slender and graceful, as they add qualifying gestures to clarify whatever he's saying.
They got into the habit of signing their conversations and they've never entirely fallen out of it; even a spoken exchange is enhanced by signs that modify the meanings of what is said. Rantel prefers it that way; so many of the subtleties of signed speech are conveyed in the face and the body that it requires close attention. There is a connection there, an understanding that comes only with this kind of careful reading.
He doesn't have to face a speaker anymore, but he still appreciates the light touch on the arm with which Mazarun draws his attention before speaking. It's a gesture of such long standing that it
Wake The Night - Vhaeraunite HymnSons of shadow, wake the night
Let the dark awaken
Dusk's embrace strengthens your might
Guides the dark paths taken.
Take up blade and shadow-mask
In the silence creeping
Turn toward the holy task
While all else is sleeping.
Ebon-masked ones, wake the night
Let the dark awaken
Set yourselves to stand and fight
Let the world be shaken.

Beyond the Light - Vhaeraunite HymnI who wait beyond the light
I shall be the Hand of Night
(All masks be one
'til day be done)
See webs torn and webs unmade
Ended by the Shadow's Blade
(Their plots undone
The web unspun)
Blades in hand we stand and fight
Night Above is ours by right

Shall fear no sun)
By our faith let shadows rise
Over all beneath the skies

For we are one.)
The Baenre GirlsIt had been several weeks since Quenthel's resurrection. The drowess found it disconcerting to know that she had been dead, but she praised Lloth for the joy of living again to see the enemies of House Baenre destroyed. Quenthel's memories of the Demonweb Pits were blurred, like some distant dream. She remembered only the smell of sulphur and the feel of cobwebs.
Quenthel had been invited to Triel's private chambers, ostensibly for a few drinks. Quenthel knew her older sister was always looking for opportunities to size up her sisters, to analyse whether they posed potential threats. The drow smiled at the joy at which Triel greeted her return from the dead. The two sisters had always been affectionate towards each other and after the separation of death, especially so. Yet their hugs and kisses could not hide the rivalry between them. Triel was as aware of it as she was. When Quenthel got the chance to kill her sister and seize control of Menzoberranzan, it would be the final act of s
If the Shoe Fits an OrcMallow Blacknickel II was not at all happy to be in an orc camp. The orcs looked quite ready to eat him alive. Half of them were engaged in quarrels with their fellows, and those that were not were looking at him in a very intimidating way.
His companion, the drow cleric Dagestu Baenre did not look intimidated in the slightest. She looked quite out of place in the filthy camp, resplendent in her jewelry, wearing the gold robe that marked her as a cleric of Waukeen. She wore jeweled sandals on her dainty black feet.
"Try to look a bit more confident, Mallow," the drow urged. "The orcs have no respect for cowardice."
"These are big orcs, I'm just a little gnome. It's a bit hard not to look frightened, Dagestu," the cobbler replied.
The places Dagestu dragged him to. Since the renegade drow had rescued his shoemaking empire from bankruptcy, he had effectively become a servant of the Church of Waukeen. That meant following the cleric around and using his business to support her interests.
Auntie TrielDagestu knocked on the thick door of Triel Baenre's suite.
"Come in," came a voice from inside.
Knowing her aunt's rules, Dagestu slipped off her sandals before going in. Dagestu pattered into the suite, feeling the delightfully plush carpet under her bare feet.
Triel appeared, wearing a dark blue dress and barefoot. She had a silver bracelet over one of her ankles.
"You are almost as tall as me now!" said Triel. This was not saying much, for Triel was a very short Drow female.
The matron mother kissed her niece on the cheek and gave her a warm hug.
"Why does everybody have to take their shoes off in your rooms, Auntie?" asked Dagestu.
"To keep the carpet clean, my dear," Triel replied. "It's very valuable. It's woven not just from wool, but from the hair of our greatest enemies, the sun elves."
"But auntie, you're rich. You could buy another carpet if it got dirty," suggested Dagestu.
"It's true I am very rich, as the matron of the First House should be. But no matter h
Sos'umptu's Unwanted Assistant ch7The next day when Zariel arrived at the Baenre chapel, she presented Sos'umptu with a box.
The surprised chaplain opened the box.
"Honey-coated lizards!" the older Drow exclaimed with delight.
"Imported from Calimport. One of your nieces told me you liked sweets," explained Zariel.
" I certainly do. That was so kind, but it was really not necessary, child," said Sos'umptu.
"Well you were really nice to me yesterday, even after I had been such a spoiled bitch. Things are in a bad way now, but you're right, I need to trust Lolth and hope for the best," said Zariel.
Sos'umptu kissed her young assistant and gave her a hug.
Later that day, Sos'umptu was summoned to the chambers of older sister, Triel.
Sos'umptu slipped off her high-heeled shoes and stepped onto Triel's plush carpet.
Triel, wearing an elegant blue dress greeted her.
"And how is your assistant shaping up?" the matron mother asked.
"I think she has the makings of a fine Drow," replied Sos'umptu.
"Too bad," said Triel. "It s
Sos'umptu's Unwanted Assistant ch6It was apparent to Sos'umptu that Zariel had arrived at the Baenre chapel in a very bad mood.
On arrival, the young priestess kicked off her shoes awkwardly and stormed barefoot through the chapel. She aggressively grabbed a bucket of water and began mopping the floor immediately.
Sos'umptu had never seen the girl so eager to start work. Clearly there was a lot of aggression in her system that she needed to work off. Sos'umptu could tell from the Drow's face and eyes that the girl had been crying.
"What is the matter, child?" asked the Baenre chaplain.
"Nothing, mistress," snorted Zariel.
"It's useless trying to lie to a Baenre, girl," insisted Sos'umptu.
Zariel broke down and wept.
"One of my sisters has been murdered. Trezfin, the Third Daughter of my house! She was killed by rivals at Arach-Tinilith!" she wailed.
"I am sorry, my child. We Drow are a murderous race," said Sos'umptu solemnly.
"I have to go to Arach-Tinilith! I have to take vengeance on the one that killed her. But the
Aribeth's MemoirI was loved once,
The Lord held me at his right hand,
My god loved me,
I had one whom was in love with me,
His name was Fenthick,
I remember him,
I saw him hang for treachery,
And that led my hand,
I turned from the lord,
I renounced my God,
I didn't cry, why would I waste my tears,
There is no love in my heart any more,

BIG FAT DISCLAIMER
Beware of malicious 'art theft' websites!I believe I made a journal like this in the past, but I have new watchers since, so I'll say it again.
There are quite a few websites being called out for "art theft", where you use the website's search function, and your artwork will almost invariably come up. The current one I've seen is called "Axsoris", which sounds delightfully like my favorite pairing in Kingdom Hearts, but is in actuality a VERY dangerous website loaded with malware, so not only will I NOT provide a link, I will also warn that you don't even try to find it.
There are two important things you need to know about websites like these:
1. They did not "steal" your art. ...YET.
The art is "stolen" (if you want to call it that) as soon as you or someone else searches for it. This is some new script malware-spreading websites are using, and while the intent is to dupe unsuspecting people who wander across the website to use the search, this works EXCEEDINGLY WELL on concerned artists who worry that their ar

Stand your ground, know your worth!I'm sure a few of you by now have seen the recent ridiculousness regarding a job posted in the forums for a rather "epic" scene to be illustrated "at the starting price of $30".
I will do my very best to keep this short (and hopefully organized), but I want everyone to really get a good feel for this and why it's so important.
*****This applies to both hobbyist and professional artists*****
I know that a lot of you do not do art for a living. You may do art as supplemental income, or maybe you do it strictly for fun. But I want to make something very clear to each and every one of you that does art: if you have the skills, no matter what you consider yourself in regards to the arts industry, make sure you are getting paid for the WORK you are putting in.
So to summarize a lot of what all the fuss with job posting is/was about.
In the job posting the OP is basically looking for the cheapest possible price they can get by way of 'barterin

Actor Robin Williams Is Dead at 63 of Suspected Suicide
Aug 11, 2014, 9:36 PM ET
By LESLEY MESSER
The Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams died this morning in California. He was 63.
"At this time, the Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made," the Marin County Coroner said in a statement. "A forensic examination is currently scheduled for August 12, 2014 w
CPCs Creating Artificial OrphansCrisis Pregnancy Centers Creating "Artificial Orphans"
You know those "crisis pregnancy centers" that set up shop near abortion clinics, pretending to offer "options"? Turns out they won't just terrify you into having the baby; they'll terrify you into handing it over to them.
Kathryn Joyce, author of Quiverfull: Inside the Christian Patriarchy Movement, writes in The Nation:
"While there is growing awareness of how CPCs hinder abortion access, the centers have a broader agenda that is less well known: they seek not only to induce women to "choose life" but to choose adoption, either by offering adoption services themselves... or by referring women to Christian adoption agencies. Far more than other adoption agencies, conservative Christian agencies demonstrate a p
You don't have to be a 'pro' to be an artistYou do not need to do art for a living to be a great artist. You don't need fancy tools, either. You don't even have to go to a big expensive art college.
Then what DO you need? To love it. Just, enjoy art. Love to do it. Love to explore it. Love to be curious about it. Love to experiment. Love to share it. Love to learn.
Why am I bringing this up? Maybe because in our quest for art, we forget WHY we do art. Over the past couple of years I have asked myself if I would be OK with not doing art as my main source of income. I have realized that, I will be happy as long as I can do art and share it, and enjoy the art of others. I always have a need to create so as long as I can work out that creative energy I will be happy.
This may sound strange coming from someone who's been seeking that art path for years, but I was reminded today of an extremely skilled and well known artist who actually is only a hobbyist. I wanted to share this to show that you can still strive to be a gr
